Definitely not the strongest novel in the series. The first two thirds or so involves a lot of paranoia and strife between characters that had supported a rock steady friendship until this book. Admittedly, a lot of it falls on Yelena and her Issues, but it made for a less enjoyable story to have all the relationships so fraught with distrust.

Then after all that, the last third feels a bit rushed and fractured - like the author had a fast approaching deadline and a long list of Plot Points that still had to be stuffed in before it arrived. In an effort to cover everything as quickly as possible, it seemed like a lot of story development was sacrificed, and the character development was less "development" and more "I felt this way five minutes ago, but now I am much wiser and I am secure in my righteousness and I know I should feel this way now"...which is less than believable and, again, made for a far less satisfying and engrossing read.

The third instalment in the Study Series by Maria V Snyder.
This book is the thrilling conclusion to the story and we find out what happens to Yelena as she progresses on the path to discovering her magical abilities as a Soulfinder. We find out more about the cryptic plans of Ferde and who is actually behind all of the death and destruction.
A thrilling adventure with tales of love and loss that will capture your heart and make you fall in love.

I enjoyed the first two but just totally lost interest with the third one.

Not as good as Magic Study - I found myself wondering how many times the author would use the plot "twist" where Yelena would be apparently pricked by Curare, but instead would pretend to be paralyzed and then surprise her attackers. Seriously, this happened at least four times. Comeon now. A little creativity, please??? Overall, I liked the series, but the second book was by FAR the best.

I always forget how much I freaking love this series!

The plot is amazing, the characters are amazing. It’s well paced and the magic system is really cool!

I’m gonna take a break (and read other books) before I start on Opal’s story - I haven’t read her books before and I’m interested to see what happens!

Also, can I have Valek? He’s the best male character I’ve encountered
