Beautiful. There’s too much to say. Just read it.

The ballet component of this book made it a real treat to read but add in the backdrop of communist China and this is a story everyone should read.

I was captivated by first part of the book- Li's portrayal of growing up during Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. However I felt that there was a turning point in the storytelling after his first marriage- although still sad, it lost some intensity and stayed that way until the end of the book. The postscript was a saving grace, and it was fulfilling to finish on a high note- that hard work and devotion to family will lead to happiness.

Mao’s Last Dancer

A story of perseverance and cultural transformation, but not for everyone. Li Cunxin’s journey from rural China to international ballet stardom is inspiring, but if you’re not into memoirs or dance, it can feel slow and overly detailed. The cultural and political aspects are interesting, but the writing didn’t grip me. Had to read it for school—wouldn’t have picked it otherwise.

Favorite Quotes:

“The past is the foundation of the future.”
“Seize the opportunities life offers you.”
Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re really into ballet or personal memoirs.
