WW2 YA. It was ok. I've read better. I was just kind of bored.

WW2 books are a dime a dozen, and this is one of many I read for school as a kid. It wasn't as good as Lois Lowry's Number the Stars, but overall is a solid read for kids. I remember enjoying it, even if it was at first difficult to connect with the main character (which I'd say was trauma, in retrospect).

Thi book is simply amazing. My heart broke for David, a concentration camp child who tries to find his mother. So, so good.

My nine-year old son called it "the best book I have read in my whole life." I decided to check for myself. This has got to be one of the best written stories. Ever.

I was expecting more from this book to be honest. It seemed to build up to a few surprises but left me deflated with a lot of questions unanswered and ended far too abruptly.

The other thing that confused me was that David escaped from a POW camp which, on initial thought, made me believe that this was set in World War II and yet when he meets the English couple he is told that Queen Elizabeth II is on the throne which makes this no earlier than 1953, so when is this set?

Overall, cute in places but ultimately a let down.

This was a great book, I have read it as a child as chose to reread it during the lockdown of 2020. Its story is powerful but you can tell its a translated book as the prose doesn't flow as naturally in English. However, I would recommend this book. It's great for kids as its written in the eyes of a child, also it is a true story.

Loved this movie and so when I found out it was based off of a book I had to read it. Come to find out the book is a young adults novel so it was a really easy read, but that doesn't mean it's not filled with emotion and important situations. When it comes to whether I like the book better or the movie I think it's about 50/50. I liked the fact that in the book you know everything that David is thinking because it's narrated by him, you really find out how he feels about things and why he is the way he is. But I like the ending in the movie a whole lot better, I think it is much more powerful, where as the ending in the book just kind of ends. I also feel that parts of the book seemed rushed through like there could have been more information but the author just left it out. That does make sense though seeing as it is a book for younger people. Overall I think this is a pretty great book and you should deffinitly check it out if you've seen the movie or are interested in historical fiction dramas.
