Solid historical fiction with a fairly plausible story set around the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79, although the occasional anachronistic contemporary reference or style of prose or dialog may bother some people.

It was a very slow read. The whole beginning was pointless considering what happened, yet it took up more than half the book. Not to mention the ending was a let down after going through all that with the characters.
I enjoyed it, but it felt a little forced. The thought of what is to come hangs a little heavily on the beginning of the story. This book did cause me to read more non-fiction on the subject.
A nice reconstruction of the eruption set to the tune of fiction, even if the end was a little cheeseball.

Buku ini keren banget—sumpah! Beneran page-turner.
Tadinya mau ngasih bintang lima, tapi justru romance antar dua tokoh utama yang menurut saya terlalu terburu-buru membuat saya jadi nurunin rating jadi 4.5.
Tapi serius, buku ini keren. *nggak ada kata lain, mbak?*

Years ago, my high school Latin class took a field trip to Pompeii - but I was unable to go. Two weeks ago, I finally made it. I stood in the ruins of Pompeii, admired the view of Vesuvius, and tried to envision what life would have been like the days before the eruption. A few days later, a lovely Scottish couple recommended this book to me - and I'm glad they did. Were parts of the subplots unrealistic? Sure. Did I know how it was going to end? Well, we all know at least one major plot point. But the immersion in Roman culture felt true to me and the story moved well enough to keep me captivated. I think he captured the sense of confusion, foreboding, and doom quite well.
Very interesting historical fiction book. There was a lot of vocabulary to learn, especially terms having to do with the aqueducts that was confusing for me, but a good story.
