As ever with Robert Harris, you learn while being entertained. I'm now in awe of Roman water engineering, while also caught up in a typical story of politics, greed and intrigue set on the eve of the explosion.

Entertaining enough, starts with almost a detective novel plot and then moves on to lots of volcanic drama. The main character wasn't very interesting, and I didn't buy that he would go back into Pompeii during the eruption to try to rescue a woman he'd only met two or three times, no matter how attractive she was.
