Who doesn’t love the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? I know I do. And, despite not having read this author before, that idea totally sold me on wanting to read this book. Two people having one travel disaster after another while trying to get to their families but add in the potential for them to fall in love (somehow that wasn’t part of the Steve Martin movie charm lol).
I think the craziest thing about the book is it makes you think about how different your reaction to someone could be if you were actually around a stranger long enough to get to know them. Cause Cassidy and Luke do not have a meet cute. He “steals” her parking spot when she’s running late for her flight, she dislikes him immediately and forms an opinion on “his type” yet she doesn’t know him at all.
Luke is trying to fly home to be with his family because he’s worried that his sister is keeping his mom’s health issues a secret from him.
Cassidy is trying to get home to her sister’s wedding. Cassidy feels an unbelievable amount of pressure, from her mom, to make her sister’s wedding perfect. And Cassidy has spent her entire life trying to keep the peace with her mom and stay close with her sister despite being incredibly jealous of her.
When Luke and Cassidy’s flight is grounded, Luke offers to let Cassidy join him in his rental car since it’s the last one.
I felt like Cassidy and Luke were both incredibly nice people who always put absolutely everyone first (to a fault though).
I really enjoyed the funny portion of the book where one catastrophe after another derailed their travels, keeping them away from their destinations yet bringing them closer together.
I don’t know if this is a complaint per se but once this switched into love story mode it just stayed there. It took a long while to get to that point but I found the story more entertaining during the parts where they were traveling together and getting to know each other. Once the feelings and attractions came to the surface, it got more dramatic. The stuff with both of their families was way less fun than the rest of the story. I noticed content warnings because it deals with major health issues, alcohol issues, abandonment and verbal abuse from both Will and Cassidy’s moms respectively. I think that’s worth mentioning cause it does get a little heavy for awhile during the time both Will and Cassidy are trying to figure out how to live for themselves rather than their mothers.
I enjoyed the story but I probably enjoyed the first 75% more than the last 25%.
