Well did I ever have a good time reading this book. I crushed it in two days and was hooked from the very first page — which is such a rare and welcome treat.
The world-building could use a bit more depth (some places felt like they needed more grounding), but the concept? So fun. The idea of four remnants — scattered souls tied to elemental powers — being the key to saving the world? Fresh, creative, and gave me something new to chew on in the fantasy genre.
Add in some fae, warring kingdoms, and a delicious slow-burn enemies to lovers romance, and you’ve got a recipe I’m always happy to devour. The FMC is a real standout: brave, kind, and someone I could actually root for. She’s got heart, grit, and a touch of chaos in the best way.
Overall, The Wind Weaver is a fast-paced, emotionally charged fantasy that hits familiar tropes with a bit of a twist. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next in the series.
Please remember Reading is subjective.

for me that was a five star read!!! i need the next book NOW!! also i am team Soren
This book was so good. The first line on of the book “The noose chafes, a necklace of death”. Are you kidding me if that line doesn’t grab your attention nothing will. The world building is fantastic. This was a long book as with most fantasy a lot of the story was just setting up the world for the series. Sometimes this made it feel a bit clunky but I read a lot of fantasy and that’s kind of the norm. I’m a sucker for an interesting magic system but I felt like this one could have been better developed through the book. With it being the first in a series I always go into it expecting to see details ironed out over the following books.
The FMC was ok, I found myself feeling a little meh about her. There were moments when I loved her but a lot more where I was annoyed that she was running away, again… The slow burn was very slow. Penn was interesting to me in the beginning and I loved the banter. I loved Soren from the moment he was introduced and the side characters were made this book for me.
Overall even though it felt a little heavy at times and the plot kind of got lost toward the end I enjoyed this book and definitely will read the next. I know the first book in a series always involves a lot of setup and I’m hopeful that book 2 will have better pacing.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Wind Weaver is an engaging and imaginative fantasy debut (although, not the author's debut book) that really pulls you in from the very first page. I loved the initial opening, it's fast-paced, entertaining, and completely absorbing. The first half of the book flies by, with a great mix of action, magic, and character development. Honestly, it felt like a breath of fresh air.
Julie Johnston’s writing style itself is a real standout. The language is vivid and fluid, and there’s a rhythm to her prose that makes the world so easy to sink into, like truly, I felt so immersed. Rhya’s discovery of her powers and the world of elemental “maegic” is full of wonder, and it’s fun to learn alongside her as everything slowly unfolds. The romantic tension and light love triangle keep things interesting, and I liked the way the stakes were gradually raised.
That said, the third act does slow down quite a bit. There’s a lot of introspection and repetition, and it feels like not much happens for a while. At over 500 pages, the story definitely could have been trimmed without losing any of its impact. I also found myself missing a stronger cast of secondary characters, especially other women. Most of the female side characters fell into some tired (and somewhat sexist) tropes think barmaids, servants, or wives and unfortunately, I think I can count them all on one hand. Hopefully that’s something that gets addressed in future instalments.
Still, there’s a lot to enjoy here and I can see why it's receiving love. The world-building shows real promise, and while not everything is explained (thanks to a few too many “I’ll tell you later” moments), I’m hopeful that more clarity and depth will come as the series continues. Overall, The Wind Weaver is a solid and enjoyable read that lays intriguing groundwork for what’s to come.
