I had the best time reading this, it was so effortlessly compelling I found myself devouring it in one sitting.

I feel like this series is only just getting started and has started out so strong. I have so many theories and thoughts about where I think this could go,  who Earth might be, and whether it should end as a polycule instead because there is clearly tension between Penn and Soren!

I think this was a really interesting take on a fae romance, and while I can spot influences in the lore, it feels completely original which is really exciting. Elemental magic isn’t anything new, but in conjunction with the other elements there’s something magical about it. I appreciated that we have seen the different ways in treating their magic though Penn’s all or nothing approach compared to Soren’s much more delicate nuanced control.

I think Rhya was a really great FMC to follow, because she is so strong in her convictions and her moral point of view, that is then shattered by the cruelty of the world around her. Seeing her deal with multiple kill or be killed situations and coming out on the other side wracked with guilt over preserving her own life is something I don’t think we see recognised in the genre.

My most minor of issues was how often a chapter ended or an encounter resolved with her blacking out. I know it’s a developmental thing with he powers, but I did get a bit fed up of reading about how it all went black.

I started off this book sort of angry because I didn’t appreciate how the first potential love interest treated the main character. He was needlessly very mean to her, and you eventually learn it was because he was just fearful for her life and that they were on the run and he couldn’t afford to be gentle, getting them through the harsh conditions to where they were going, but he could not see from her perspective how His treatment of her would not lend itself to trust or kinship between them. He was genuinely hurt that she wasn’t super appreciative of his efforts, and even his friends were disappointed when she expressed negative feelings towards this man. And all of that is one thing, but for the main character to then feel guilty about not trusting him more we’re not giving him the benefit of the doubt, I was just really struggling because at that point he had not given her any information to persuade her fears or make her feel better about her circumstances, and just expected her to be grateful for what he HAD done for her. and I don’t super vibe with that, but as I kept reading, I understood why he acts the way he does and I think it is central to his character and whatever journey that he is going on, and I think it was important to have him be this way to be in stark contrast to the other potential love interest so knowing all of that, I did soften to him a little bit, but it’s still annoyed me that the main character felt guilty in some regard for things, she said to him and how she’d behaved toward him when I personally felt her feelings, and her behavior were totally justified. But I can’t tell if it’s intentional that the main character feels that way because she’s going to go on a journey of realizing that she shouldn’t feel that way, or if it’s just a flaw in the writing of the character.

All that being said, I ended up really enjoying this book and was on the edge of my seat by the end of it!! Like I said, as I learned more about the first love interest, I was able to just enjoy their dynamic a bit more, even though he did regularly annoy me with certain feelings that he had that I felt he wasn’t entitled to, but I digress. I can see the intention with him behaving this way to pave the way for a love triangle with this other potential love interest, and I’m very intrigued to see how that plays out in the second book. I thought this book was written pretty well and the story definitely kept my attention. It’s not the most unique book I’ve ever read, but that doesn’t really matter to me when I had a great time reading it.
