The Wind Weaver

I did DNF this book but as I got 50% through I’m taking it as read because I tried!

The fact is this book didn’t work for me. The pacing was too slow and inconsistent. If it had been more action packed at the start (and considering Rhya was taken by Scythe/Penn and being chased by unseen pursuers you’d think it would be more fast paced). It was so slow trying build Scythe as the love interest as well. He didn’t take his helmet off for like the first quarter of the book it felt like.

As the book started to get interesting it then hinted at a love triangle to come and I was like seriously? Have we not moved past such boring things? I’ve read reviews and it seems it’s not an issue in this book but definitely is building to something.

The fact is the plot isn’t the same by this just felt too much like ACOTAR vibes and I am not here for that. The writing isn’t bad, I appreciated there was no info dump at the start in the form of world building. I think it was just a bit too slow. I would have liked more development to start and then a faster paced plot through the next part of the book.

Let me start by saying I haven’t really read romantasy — no ACOTAR or Fourth Wing — and I was a little nervous about diving into a new world. However, I love Julie Johnson’s work and I always want to support her so I knew I had to read this. I’m so glad I did. This book grabbed me within the first 20 pages and didn’t let me go. Julie builds a fascinating, unique, addictive world without overwhelming the reader with information or leaving us confused.

I love the characters. I love that Rhya is strong, skilled and determined — she’s no damsel in distress. She may not understand what’s happening at first but she is quick to catch up and not willing to give up without a fight. She is stubborn in the best way.

I love a grumpy hero and Penn does not disappoint. I love how fiercely protective he is of Rhya and how much he cares for this friends and his people. I wish he’d let his guard down a little more but I hope we get that in the second book.

This book gave be strong Outlander (one horse, long journey, healer — hello Claire and Jaime) and Game of Thrones vibes. It was like the best of both shows.

I can’t wait until the next book is announced. But please no love triangles. Rhya and Penn HAVE TO be endgame

I think Wind Weaver is a great example of a book that really sticks the landing. I loved the final third — the pacing picked up, the stakes felt real, and I was fully invested by the end. That said, the first two-thirds didn’t hit quite as hard for me. It might be because I went in with sky-high expectations after seeing it all over my FYP, so I was expecting to be blown away from page one. Definitely felt a bit overhyped at first, but I’m glad I stuck with it. That ending made it worth it.

I absolutely loved the premise of this book and love the elemental magic. I love the tension. I love the world. I loved the magical creatures/ monsters. I am very interested in where this story will go.
Now, it says adult enemies to lovers. I will say that the main characters acted more like teenagers in their will-they-won’t-they romance. And it was more reluctant allies to lovers than enemies. And I wanted a bit more world building.
But overall I think this is a promising story and I will definitely be on the lookout for book 2!

I loved this book so much! I could not stop reading it, except for sleep and I am in need of book 2. The magic, the world, the characters, all of them were so well done and kept me immersed.

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
