Ali Hazelwood is just not my favorite. As others have noted, her early writing is Rey/Kylo Ren fanfic and as this is her first full novel, it clearly draws heavily on that and because of it, the characters feel very flat and unrealistic, they are ciphers of other characters in other stories. Also as an academic who would love to see the setting represented with some basis in reality, the scene where the main female protagonist sits in the lap of the male protagonist in a crowded lecture hall was so far out of left field I skimmed but didn't really finish.

Reread this as I was swayed by all the promo for the new movie coming out next year. And I have to say, I didn’t remember a lot about the story.
One thing that does stand out to me after finishing my reread is that I feel like Hazelwoods writing and story telling has significantly improved since this debut novel.

📚 STEM setting
📚 grumpy x sunshine
📚 forced proximity

“At least there’s that”
“Olive. This might be inappropriate but…you are really…You are extraordinary”
Not a huge fan of the miscommunication & third act break up. But I’ll let it slide this time.
Original thoughts
Loved this one. I actually held off because although I had seen all the five star reviews, I had also come across those who hated it and didn’t understand the hype (there are others in this genre I’ve read that are popular that I didn’t rate that highly).
But say what you will about this genre and the inevitable tropes, I could not put this one down (even when I should have just gone to sleep). But really enjoyed the chemistry between the leads and I felt the pacing was good.
Didn’t mind this take in the ‘fake dating’ trope, as it ‘just’ was for understandable reasons. The miscommunication on the other hand, is something I can’t stand, in any genre. There were definitely times when it just seemed so illogical that they wouldn’t just tell the truth.
Irregardless, I did have a good time reading this and like the fact that a male lead could be unapproachable but that didn’t mean he had to be controlling (looking at you Fifty Shades/ Twilight).
Found the ending satisfying and the main loose ends had been tied up.

Such a cute romance. I loved the accuracy and representation of demisexuality in the book. It had me blushing at times feeling like I’m intruding. It also touched on so many real themes as someone in STEM and grad school.
