I got a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This retelling of the beloved story by Hans Christian Andersen, "The Little Mermaid" was an enjoyable read. When the Sea Witch, who lives a pointless, cruel life at the bottom of the sea decides to go to live on land, she takes one of the Mer Princes with her. That's what happens when you are cursed by the Devil himself and you decide to be cruel to others. Living away from the sea, the Mer Prince is not happy living with and serving the Sea Witch, who will live a not very exemplary life during her long time on land. But the curse will follow her out of the sea and she has to find someone to replace her as the Sea Witch once she dies. Then along comes Miriam, and things will start getting complicated. Nothing will be the same again.

I found the story entertaining, but I couldn't really get to like the characters. They were flat and a little bit one-dimensional. The evil ones are pure evil and the good ones are pure kindness. Granted that normally fairy tales are like that, but this is supposed to be a retelling, not a fairy tale once again. The religious theme in this story was also kind of overwhelming, like hitting you on the head with it. I like religion to be more subtle than that (there is a reason why I don't read religious books); and I wasn't definitely expecting to find too much religion in this story.

Overall, an entertaining read that would keep you busy over the weekend.
