I saw a review that said the dog lives, but
Slaughterhouse 5 scarred me for life with the whole clock parts in meat thing so I think I’ll just pass right now (seriously threw that book across the room for that).

I also just didn’t really care for Part 1. The synopsis is so strong and I was really hoping the actual book would keep me just as hooked, but it didn’t unfortunately.

As readers and viewers we're stingier with our empathy than we'd like to admit

Thank you Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC of The Last Word

This book takes your expectations for an "isolated beach house/holiday home/cabin" story and absolutely shreds them in front of you.

Fast paced, dark and delightfully meta.

I'm still slightly conflicted about the revelation to readers that our protagonist will die approximately 35% of the way through the story. I will admit that I was more invested in whether the dog lives, and I feel that Taylor Adams expertly took advantage of that.

"She expected Jason Voorheas. She got a life size Chucky doll"
Despite being absolutely mental, it also had an unexpected sense of humour

You might guess some of the plot twist/s, but you'll likely still get caught off guard somewhere in the mix.

I would not dare to give this book anything other than 5 stars.
I give The Last Word  five stars of my own independent choice.

Tone's a little weird. The killer is such a played-up incel stereotype that he can only read as comical, but the other characters seem relatively grounded and we're supposed to take their plights seriously. It felt sort of unbalanced, how 'real' are these characters supposed to be? How much is this satire and how much is it horror? I don't think this book quite hit on a good middle ground.

Otherwise, it was a fun read. It was fast-paced and tense at the right moments, with a heroine that who, while not infallible, was clever and easy to root for. Despite the more outlandish elements, I was never fully taken out of the story and had a hard time putting it down.

And the dog lives, thank god!
