Daisy Jones & The Six tells the story of, well, Daisy Jones (singer) and The Six (band) and their rise to rock star fame both separately and together, and their subsequent falling out.

Daisy Jones is a young woman to whom everything always came easy except for getting the attention of her parents. She gets into drugs and unhealthy relationships very early in her life, puts out an album that is popular, but not what she wanted, and finally finds the fame and creative freedom she's been yearning for when she sings a duet with The Six.

The Six are a rock band formed around the Dunne brothers in their teens. They search for fame and rock'n'roll, but there's tension in the band, as Billy sees the band as his and searches for ways to be steady to his wife, while the rest of the band want more space for creative input and not only to play songs about Billy's wife. Their big break comes with a duet with the pop singer Daisy Jones. Her consequently joining the band changes dynamics in the band, both for the better and for the worse.

The book then follows these changes and how the different bandmates cope with it, as well as with their changing relationship dynamics.

To be quite honest, this book included less drama and cheating than I expected. The relationships between the band members and those around them are complicated, and there is plenty of drama, but from the premise, I expected it to be "worse".
Maybe it is this, or the biographical style of this novel, that made me feel very calm while reading this book.
Taylor Jenkins Reid really thrives in this biographical style. So far I have only read "Daisy Jones & The Six" and "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo", but she manages to write true stories about fictional characters. These books include things that happened to real people in the music and film industry, making these things tangible to the reader, without this being a non-fiction book. "Daisy Jones & The Six" really dives into the characters' struggles with drugs and other issues of the industry.
Additionally, though both books are written in the style of a biography, Taylor Jenkins Reid chose two styles that are as different from one another as can be, but that work equally well. I am starting to become a fan.

After all the hype around this book, and especially the audio version of it, I was kind of expecting more. I mean, it was a good story I suppose and I liked the different formatting of it (in some ways) but it just didn’t wow me in the ways it seemed to do for others.

I found the different characters to be a nice touch but the constant announcing of names was both helpful and annoying, which was odd. I found myself getting lost trying to keep apart some of the supporting roles.  Overall though, the voice actors did well and helped convey the almost documentary type vibe of the recording. I could almost picture it on VH1 with each band mate giving their own accounts between clips. Some scenes left me with clear visuals of the situation being described (like the album cover photoshoot) and others left me feeling a little lost. For the most part though, I think the author does a great job of painting a picture of the scenes even though Daisy was the only character I could clearly imagine due to the many descriptions of her look.

All in all, it was a good read but maybe I just let the hype set me up for a bit of a let down. It wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever read like I was lead to believe could be the case. Not sure it’s re-read material for me but I don’t regret it. Maybe if I would’ve went in with no expectations I would’ve had different feelings about it. I did really like the end when they tied things up and were talking directly to the “interviewer.” Anyway, I’m rambling now as I try to sum up my thoughts. I think I’ve said what I needed to though so we’ll leave this here for now.

I wasn’t initially sold on this concept, but I was hooked on this book from « End of fucking story. » at the end of the first chapter. The structure is very cool and the multiple narrators played off each other in a way that drove the conflict in present-day even though they were telling 40 year-old stories. I also really liked how the book was rooted in the song lyrics and found myself very much wanting to hear the actual songs.

I think one of my favorite things though was the reveal of the author at the end. I read that part and immediately wanted to start the book over again to examine how their bias could have impacted the storytelling. It made me question my own memory of the story and my affinities for certain characters over others.
Although they weren’t the « narrator »,
they had a heavy hand in shaping the story in a way I don’t think I recognized until then. It added a whole new level of artfully constructed depth to the exploration of memory and storytelling.

I think I wanted to not like this book. I thought it was going to be boring because I thought it was going to be too similar to Evelyn Hugo with the “interview” perspective. But it isn’t. It’s so different to the other books Reid has written. It’s so different from any book I’ve ever read. You can’t help but fall in love with Daisy while being mad at her for not getting her sh!t together at the same time.

I loved Camilla too. She’s such a badass. Loving both of them really bad me understand Billy’s struggle

Did anyone else realize that this was fiction before the end? 🤯 I was googling stuff the entire time!
A great read.
