Damn this book is good. The show is great but the book is even better.

I was wary because of the writing style for the first few chapters of the book. However, Martin won in the end, sucked me into his story, and I'll definitely be reading the rest of this series if the quality is maintained. I just wish the series was completed so as to avoid years of suspense. :)

A fantastic novel of high fantasy - particularly for people like me who really don't like high fantasy. Martin's world is so epic, so gripping, so gritty, and so steeped in reality that it's hard to get bored. What's more, he avoids so many of the cliches of the genre that make his colleagues so impossible to read.

One warning to fans of the show - aside from some illuminating details here and there, the producers and writers kept studiously close to the text, so don't expect a single surprise. Just enjoy Martin's superb prose on your way to try to get A Clash of Kings ready before the new season starts.
