Totally absurd family drama - starts with a car wreck and a murder, and then continues with internet sex hook-ups, lesbian 11-year-olds, a bar mitzvah in South Africa, and maybe just a dash of redemption. Fun read!

DNF

Harold Silver builds a life from tragedy, seemingly falling into situations randomly, including sex partners, large amounts of money, and a family. Although I enjoyed the narrtive and felt the first half of the novel was captivating, I was diappointed in the ending. I think the tidy knotting of the multiple story lines was contrived.

What the eff did I just read?

I feel like my sense of humor and intellect did not show up for this book based on other reviews.. I enjoyed it at the beginning, then it got more and more bizarre, then I just completely lost interest

This is the 4th book of Homes I've read and I'm pretty sure she's one of my favorite writers by now. She manages to create unlikely events (not that tragedy is unlikely) that are somehow rendered plausible, dark, hilarious and touching - with an unsentimental style. I could go on but that's what all the other reviews are for. I'm a fan. Period.

In the style of Jonathon Franzen's 'The Corrections', this is a dark comic take on postmodern family life and searches for meaning. At times it flies, at others (such as a clichéd and patronising digression to South Africa) it's far from worthy of that exalted company. When it's good, it's brilliant; which makes its weak moments all the more frustrating.
