تبدأ رواية "لعلنا نُغتفر" بطريقة سوداوية للغاية وجد أخاذة, تحكي قصة أخوين مختلفين جداً عن بعضهماالبعض, تقلب حياة أحدهما (أو كليهما) رأساً على عقب بتصرف طائش و عنيف من الأول... هكذا تبدأ الرواية, حوالي العشرين صفحة الأولى, هذه هي القصة, مع كثير من الكوميدياالسوداء

مابعد العشرين صفحة الأولى, تأخذ الرواية منحنى أخر مختلف كلياً وتتحول إلى شيء أخر كلياً, تافه أحياناً و لا يصدق في أحيان أخرى. لا توجد قصة رئيسية هنا, لا توجد نهاية حتمية تسعى إليها هذه الشخصيات, إن هذه القصة في معظمها هي مجموعة من القصص الفرعية في حياة هذه الشخصيات التي اختلقتها (إيمي إم. هومز) في روايتها هذه

تقييمي في الواقع لهذه الراوية هو نجمتان ونصف, لأنها في الواقع ليست سيئة لدرجة نجمتين, لكنها في الحقيقة كانت لتكون رواية أفضل بكثير لو انها اتخذت مساراً أخر مختلف

لا أعلم كيف سيتم تحويل هذه الرواية إلى فيلم, الشركة المنتجة لفيلم هذه الرواية لديها سجل مع الأفلام المتوسطة. المشكلة هنا ليست أن الشركة المنتجة ليست جيدة كفاية, المشكلة هو ان هذه الرواية تصلح كمسلسل أكثر منه فيلم, لكن في الحالتين سيكون فيلم/مسلسل غير مثير للاهتمام حقاً, مثل تلك المسلسلات التي تنطلق ببايلوت ممتاز جداً ثم تقضي بقية حياتها على الهواء بحلقات جد متوسطة او تافهة

The first few chapters of this book are brilliant – dark, laugh-out loud funny, pitch perfect in pacing and character development. And then. And then the story becomes a bit far-fetched but because of the earlier promise, I kept at it. And then I’m not sure what exactly happened. The story becomes not only far-fetched, but labored and lost. I felt bamboozled. The characters pointlessly meander off to South Africa (perhaps the author took a trip there and decided to include her own experiences?) and 11-year-old kids talk like 20-year-olds, and there is a weird facility for the criminally insane. I assume the intention was dark humor, but it did not work for me. It’s fine to have eccentric characters find love and acceptance through a series of events and circumstances, and the set-up for a tale of self-discovery with humor, wit and pathos was really good. Pity it did not carry through.
(The 3 stars are only for the first third of the book)

Humorous and strangely uplifting in ways reminiscent of American Beauty. Homes' writing is a pleasure to read, but this novel lacked the momentum found in her other work.

This is either a brilliant book with a meticulous plot structure, or an awful book filled with tangent plots propped and dropped, and written after eating an entire pan of special brownies. It might be both.
