I didn't know about the format when I picked this book out at the library, and I actually thought it would be fine, but it bothered me. I think the story relied too much on unclear drawings. Maybe if you're used to reading graphic novels, it's easier to follow, but I had a really hard time. All the people looked the same in the pictures. I really thought it added nothing. The writing was good, and I think I would have liked it better if it had been all novel, though I did get lost towards the end. I'm not sure if there were plot holes, or it just took me too long to get around to finishing it and I'd forgotten details from earlier, but I was definitely confused, and I'm not sure the ending made sense. In fact, I'm not sure what happened at the end, because it was done in hard to understand comic book pages. The story was interesting, so I gave it 3 stars, but I wouldn't recommend it, and I won't be reading the next one.
It took a little while to get into this one, but once I did I really enjoyed it. I liked a lot if the main characters, even though they aren't all meant to be likeable.

This is a massive tome - coming in at well over 700 pages. It is unclear exactly what came from who, but several individuals were involved in the creation of this book - including Kevin Costner.
It was interesting, but also disappointing and confusing. It harked back to earlier adventure tales with mystical elements, but also went far beyond them.
The book is written partially as narrative but also partially as a graphic novel - and frequently switches back and forth between the two. I'm no adept are reading graphic novels - so maybe others would know - but in several places the images are too difficult to interpret as far as what is occurring.
I really wanted to like this book...and I don't read fiction and did complete it - so that says something...but, I just don't know.
Maybe this will be like Alice in Wonderland, a book that gets its fair share of ridicule at first but is eventually recognized for its artistry, humor, and absurdness.

Azért vettem ki a könyvtárból, mert szép - élmény lapozgatni, akármilyen is a szöveg.
Az első pár oldal alapján vegyes a hangulatom: időnként nehezen érthető a szöveg, azaz hogy most kiről is van szó (a Nixon bemutatását követő részt kétszer is vissza kellett olvasni); a képregény legalább érthetőbb :) A költő kicsit nem tudja, mit akar: jelen idő, múlt idő, E/2., E/3.... na majd meglátjuk.

Kár, hogy nem koncepcionálták jobban a könyvet. Érdemes lett volna a szöveges részt a helyszínek és történelem, esetleg a szereplők bemutatására használni, és képregényben az eseményeket rögzíteni. Kicsit faramuci így, hogy a cselekmény szövegben meg képben is ott van...
Zavar az is, hogy a képregényben a fontosnak ítélt szavak alá vannak húzva. Zavarja az összképet, azonkívül sokszor ritmikailag is rosszul jön ki, mert az angol és a magyar hangsúlyozás nem ugyanúgy működik.
Ezzel együtt kalandos a könyv, izgalmas olvasni, mindig várom a következő eseményeket.

Egy új kaland kezdődött, illetve csupán visszaugrottunk az időben és megismerjük a FT mindennapjait. Nekem ez a sztori is tetszik.
Azt sajnálom csak, hoy Arthur Ogden naplórészletei is teljesen ugyanabban a stílusban íródtak, mint a könyv szöveges része, annyira, hogy ugyanúgy kiszól az olvasóhoz (egy naplóból?). A szerző szerint fontos szavak hangsúlyozása is ugyanúgy megvan, csak itt aláhúzás helyett kurziválással. De igyekszem eltekinteni tőle...

Ahhoz képest, mennyi infó belefér(ne) ennyi oldalba, meglepően homályosra és szűkszavúra sikerült a megoldás, a befejezés.
Az olvasók közül sokan felhozzák problémaként, hogy túl sok a szereplő - ez annyiban igaz, hogy bár szerintem nincsenek túl sokan, mégsem elég különbözőek. Ogden legénységéből az indiait, Mulcairnt, Rentont könnyű volt megkülönböztetni, de a többieket nem igazán, pedig a könyv vége felé ennek még van jelentősége.
A szöveges rész nagyjából jelen időben maradt, bár néha érthetetlenül múlt időben mesél pár sor erejéig, és az egész könyv alatt nem derül ki, ki a narrátor - ami azért baj, mert a hangnem (meg a jelen idő) azt sejteti, hogy a csapat egyik tagja mesél, akit a többiek végig nem szólítanak meg - mintha valami láthatatlan kém lenne. Nem értem azt sem, hogy elmaradt az E/2. fogalmazás, egy idő után a narrátor nem szólítja meg az olvasót - örülök neki, mert kilógott a lóláb, de egyben az is nyilvánvaló, hogy ennek sosem volt szerepe, tehát teljesen átgondolatlanul alkalmazták a szerzők a könyv első felében.
Ezek miatt pedig az is egyértelmű, hogy a formátumba sokkal több energiát fektettek, mint a történetbe és az elmesélés módjába, amit én egyáltalán nem szeretek. A könyv mint történet 2 csillagot ér, a kivitele, a szemgyönyörködtetés 5-ös, így állapodjunk meg valahol félúton...

This is the first graphic novel that I have ever finished though I have started several others. I would give it some credit for being engaging enough to see me through a genre I wasn't certain of. I got this novel for Christmas from my husband after falling in love with the cover of the novel in Chapters.
This novel is a victorian style adventure story in the vein of Indiana Jones and other treasure hunting adventurers. I recently bought the board gamae Fortune and Glory and this reminded me of it a lot. Apparently, I have a thing for treasure hunting adventures!
The novel follows a rogue set of men during WWI as they follow their leader on an adventure to save his brother. His brother has been stricken ill be apparently discovering Shambhala in the Arctic. The adventure traipses around the world as they get into various shenanigans, collecting even more unusual characters and eventually discover what they are looking for.
I was surprised to discover by reviews that people either love or hate this novel. I suppose it is a bit slow to start and full of a fairly intense story. It is certainly not a novel you would want to give to children despite modelling itself off of old children's stories. If you can get through the slower bits it is definitely worth the read. I was sad when the novel ended and can't wait for the next adventure.

Kicsit többet vártam az egész történettől, voltak helyek ahol nem is értettem miről van szó. Egyébként jó lenne a könyv, ha jobban kidolgozták volna a történetszálakat.

This is a “white man’s” burden, Edwardian-ish (except during WWI) piece of fiction—written in the 21st century. Blech, no. So glad I didn’t buy this.
