It's ironic this arc is called The Golden Age.  Guts is born to a hanged woman, raised by a disease crazy lady, then by the mercenary Gambino where he learns the sword. Then after battle gets raped by a soldier who paid Gambino for the opportunity.  The mercenary life is brutal and it eventually leads to Guts meeting Griffith, Casca, and the Hawks.

If this is The Golden Age, Guts is in for some crazy shit!
