I honestly do not recommend this book. I’m a John Grisham fan which is what led me to read this especially since its frame as a sequel to “The Firm.” But wow, it’s so, so bad.
It is a horrible and problematic portrayal of Libya, and even if it were objectively looked at in terms of writing about a hostage situation, it’s poorly done. So much of the situation could’ve been addressed early on, and they dragged things out and had no idea what they were doing. Also trying to make Americans look good and better than other countries in how they would handle it when 😶
Anyway, it’s driven by the plot, but the plot is non-existent. I really don’t know what this story was actually about. I wonder who edited it as well because there’s so much language and words used that are so outdated and not ok to use anymore. It’s just….extremely weird to see. But yeah, if you’re a Grisham fan like me excited to see a new release that’s a “sequel,” don’t bother. The audiobook narration is also extremely dry.

Graphic: Xenophobia, Kidnapping
Moderate: Murder, War
Use of a word that some now use to refer to transgender folks in a derogatory way towards the end as a description of people seen in the gown (I think). It was just unnecessary but casually used.

It's been a long time since reading The Firm, but it came back to me. Good story.
I wanted/ hoped this would pick up and tell us what happened after th big twist ending of the Firm. Give some insight to how Mitch and Abby handled things and how they got to NY. That wasn’t the case. This was just another legal book and I needed it to be less that and more about them. I miss the OG Grisham book writing.
I love listening to Grisham’s books and I did enjoy this one. I do wish Mitch would realize chasing big things just doesn’t work out him. Good story just not as good as the first one.
