I started this book because I had a lot of driving to do and the narration on the series is good. So despite having not enjoyed the previous book near as much as the others in the series (I left a brief review) I started this one. I hated it. Okay, I amend that. I hated the last few chapters and when the killer is revealed it's offensive. Not only does Walt not solve the mystery except to say that he knew who it was before he caught them in the act (his knowledge in no way affecting his actions), there are some major plot holes and an offensive stereotype.
I’m amazed that this is number 13 and once again another great novel in the Longmire series. This one swings between the past which provides us yet more background about Sheriff Longmire as well as more about Martha, his late wife and the present with granddaughter Lola and daughter Cady. The past catches up with Longmire with some serious consequences. Certainly sets up for another book!

Enjoyed the book. I like the two timelines. Focused on the characters it needed to, without all that extraneous other story lines going on, which some might not like.
Walt Longmire has been in law enforcement for a long time. In Western Star, he is confronted with memories from his first case as a deputy. Walt has made the journey to the capital every four years to appear before the parole board. Partly because of a promise that he made but also because the justice part of his mind doesn't believe that the person responsible for all those deaths long ago should be set free. It soon becomes apparent that there is more to this parole hearing than any before and it is up to Walt to figure out what is going on.
The usual cast of characters help Walt get to the bottom of the crime. In the end, Walt will have to make a decision about right and wrong, regardless of the law.
This is a great series and a good story.

Ahhhh! Best book yet. The context clues throughout the book were BRUTAL, but I still did not see the end coming...
