there is so much hype around this book that i was afraid to read it and also i have a rough time with fantasy novels but dang. what a really great book. great job leigh. ok but like everyone’s arc is so valuable to me. like matthias slowly overcoming his grisha bias??? i really hated him at the beginning but he’s growing on me. and KAZ AND INEJ. at the end when he asks her to stay and then she gets KIDNAPPED?? and my precious nina. queen of hearts. cant believe she would risk getting addicted in order to save her friends like dang homie. and honestly the friendship between her and inej IS SO SLEPT ON. they’re quite literally besties. inej is my blade throwing princess and she is so underestimated by everyone in the book. AND inej and jesper are ALSO besties. jesper is my icon bc he just wants to shoot shoot and flirt. kinda iconic wish i could be like that. AND WYLAN. sweet innocent wylan. cannot wait for him to take all the revenge he wants out on his dad. and i usually have a really hard time with the setting because i can’t imagine it but you know what helped?? THE DUAL MAPS. this is mg personal petition for every fantasy book to have at least 2 maps. anyway cant wait for ck

Fantastic Read!

If I had read it when I first got it as a teenager, it would have been perfect. However, now that I am out of my teenage years, the characters felt uncomfortably young for their stories in a work fiction which discussed sex, SA, violence, and murder.  So in my head, they're older.

Inej and Waylan - 22
Kaz, Jesper, Nina - 23
Matthias - 24

Holy shit. This book is amazing. Complicated heist with so many likable and real-feeling characters. The action was so cool! I was hooked from the beginning.
Wayyyyy better than any of the Shadow and Bone books, although those were decent too. Definitely not afraid to go to darker places and it is all the better for it.  Wow. This was awesome.

So much is left hanging at the end, but it was a good ride. Didn't expect to get so many callbacks mid-heist.
