Julia Child is a direct, honest and dedicated cook and it shows up in her book. She (and her nephew) write an amazingly detailed memoir of her life that focuses much more on her passion for cooking and her constant drive for perfection than her success. It made me wish I could have lived next door to her in the 50s in France... She describes the country so vividly and she shared her cooking experiments with neighbors!

I recommend this book for food lovers and fans of France and/or cooking.

I love Julia Child. I watched her tv show as a kid and remember her odd voice and her friendly story telling. This book was a fun set of stories from her, but very disjointed and out of order. We're 88 pages in before she tells us where she and Paul were born. She mentions a book she's writing and then in the next paragraph tells us about the book. For as much care and detail as she put into her recipes, it would have been nice to see that in this book.

Fun read - although I think I enjoyed the Julia Child segments of the movie Julie & Julia more than this book itself.

I knew very little about Julia Child prior to reading this book, other than that she had a cooking show. I have since learned she was an energetic and determined person who led a very adventurous life. She took on every new challenge with optimism, and once she set her mind to something, she didn't stop until she saw it through. The work she put into her cookbooks is astounding. She is a true example of the adage that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.

If you do not know French, you will want to keep a French-English dictionary nearby while reading this book as she uses many French words and phrases. The descriptions of French foods and cooking methods can sometimes be a bit graphic - you may want to skip some of this if you are a vegetarian. She names a lot of different people which can sometimes be confusing, but the detailed descriptions of Paris and the French countryside are delightful.

Like a long leisurely stroll with a friend- just listening to lovely memories of a life well lived. You can tell Julia had a love for life and all the people she met along the way.
