Ok so this would have been 5 stars but for the fact that Veronesi does go off topic at times. The opening chapter was fabulous and had me instantly hooked. I felt I was right there on the beach watching the drama unfold. Description is piled upon description and the whole thing comes alive. It is hardly surprising that this cannot be maintained throughout the book.

The book examines how Pietro and claudia deal with a grief that does not develop as you or they would expect..at any moment he is expecting everything to implode but life just carries right on. He is moving on whilst standing still, testing things out - like challenging his memories to be painful.
