In this new translation of Ginzburg's 1952 classic we follow a young girl named Anna, her family and friends during the Second World War. As always, Ginzburg manages to assemble an idiosyncratic cast of characters who are immensely charming despite their apparent misgivings. The narrator's voice - distant, almost dry, but always empathic to its subjects - captures the vulnerability and the sublime of life and paints a complex portrait of Italian society during war. This novel proves once again why Ginzburg is one of Italy's most renowned authors of the 20th century, if not of all time.

Easy to read, don't know why but feels like a 4, was just a kind of saga read that I just enjoyed going along for the ride, however it was pitched as a story about Anna, and really i think it was a story about the men in Anna's life for the most patt
