Bardzo miła książka. Tak на легке opisane momenty z przed i wojennego życia bohaterów (druga wojna światowa - Włochy), że chce się więcej i więcej dni spędzonych z nimi. Takie 'casual' życie wojenne, ludzkie i różne. Dialogów w książce nie ma. To taki specjalny sposób pisania autorki, ale tekst taki żywy i tak dobrze przekazuje charaktery postaci, że nu kajf czytać :))

she’s done it again!

this is my second book i’ve read of natalia ginzburg’s work. i started with ‘the dry heart’ and absolutely loved it, but my fear of big books had me slightly worried for this 400+ page count.

i can happily say that this did not disappoint, nor was i bored, this book was so interesting and insightful and raw and tender.

the story is structured in two parts, the first part is introductory, and before the war breaks out in italy. you grow so attached to these characters, there little quirks and their relationships with another. it feels so down to earth and human. i commend that about her writing, it’s not overly elaborate, she’ll construct a simple short sentence packed with emotional weight. i grew to love all the characters, our at the least, understand them, ippolito was one of my faves.

part two is when things begin to escalate, anna has her baby and moves away and the effects of the war being to dawn on them more. this book doesn’t rely on crazy scenes, it’s sadness comes in the somber outlook of all the characters, the worry that looms over them. it’s a depressing and fascinating look of what it would have been like to be under fascist italy at that time.

by the end i was destroyed, i felt for characters i had loved and loss. you could feel their pain in the last few sentences, the having to live on after being through so much. the connections between characters being severed. it was a beautiful book about family relations in amidst a period of war.

ginzburg is slowly becoming one of my fave writers, the way she chooses her words is so delicate and considered. i can’t wait to read more !
