Wasn’t gripped by this, had to make myself get to the end. It was also really, really sad.
Maybe just not the right time for me, but I didn’t enjoy it.

The story of Betty, widow of an abusive drunk, her son Solo, and her tenant Mr. Chetan a closeted gay and how they find deep love and connection within their new family unit.

Audio version is amazing and will really help set the tone

Well, consider me in awe but I can’t explain the feeling I got as soon as I got to reading this book. Quickly enough, I began to learn/love each of these characters, and the more I am reminded by the familiarity it presents to island living. Being a proud islander, I am so happy to have grabbed this book as it shows (as of right now) a great perspective into what it is like to live in a Caribbean island (Trinidad is the home country for this novel) and the harsh realities residents face.

An intriguing exploration of love, familial, platonic and romantic. A stiring, heartbreaking and moving story.
I loved the strong friendship and respect between Miss Betty and Mr Chetan.
The self harm element in the latter section was some of the most confronting that I've read.

The plot seems good but I couldn’t get through the writing. Felt like a Google translate unfortunately

This was a really intense book. I loved the writing and characters. I also started googling recipes for many of the foods mentioned while reading.
