This series is so atmospheric. Like Cabeswater itself, I feel a bit like I’m floating through time and plot but everything is kind of wobbly and sparkly. It’s a vibe.
As a language nerd,I wanted the language box to be more relevant. As a Welsh learner, I want there to be Way more Welsh in this series.

If there's one thing Stiefvater can do well, it's write characters. She has created such a vibrant, likeable, and complex cast of characters. That being said, I think I liked this book a bit less than the first one. It felt like certain scenes and actions were a little out of character (seriously, why was Maura so unconcerned about inviting over and going out with a hit man ?). Also, Ronan is my least favorite of the Raven Boys, which made parts of the book feel a bit like a drag. I'm still planning to continue the series, but I think I'll be taking a small break before returning to them.

Great, solid sequel. Character development, new relationship dynamics, progress on the quest, new characters introduced who were nuanced and interesting, addictive plot and thick atmosphere. Loved it.

I could say I liked this better than the first, and it would be true, but really I liked Ronan. Ronan is really cool and complex and interesting, and that was awesome. Everything else was awful. Gansey spent the whole book being an over-involved dad who was literally perfect as described by everyone, and everyone else became such flat and shallow characters they were barely worth including in the story. And I don't even want to mention "Mr. Gray" and his sudden change of heart. I only finished this book because of Ronan and how well the stuff with Ronan was written. Although like in the first book, Stiefvater does a lot of beating you over the beat with stuff, especially the whole "Gansey-is-God" thing that seems to be the only thing keeping the characters together. I did skip pages and even chapters in this book, again because of the Gansey and the neglected character development of anyone else but Ronan. (And also why did Noah disappear? Noah is the only one of the boys I like)
On the other hand, I love Ronan's story. I love the exploration of his past and his relation to his brothers and his father. I love finding out the Ronan actually does have a pair, and that his life is not totally dependent on Gansey, the kind of dangerous back-alley world that Ronan is drawn too. I loved Ronan's actual character development, and while it didn't make up for the complete and total lack of that in anyone else, it made me want to finish the book. Although

Spoiler
I was pissed when Gansey took Ronan's balls back.
