Something important.” // “Come in.” // “You’re really not.” // “Are you seriously trying to break into my house right now?” // “He keeps the kid locked up tight.” // “Can I come home with you?” // “He’s starting to figure out that as long as he lets Liam in his life, distance be damned, his own lack of charms be damned, Liam is going to keep coming back.” // “What?” - “Nothing.” // “Game winner.” // “He’s got time. He doesn’t know how much, but — he’s still got time.” // “…but he thinks it so goddamn hard he’s pretty sure Liam hears it anyway.”

Edit 12/16/22
Just wanted to say that this book stayed with me like no other. I'm not yet ready to read it again, but I constantly think about it.
----------------
I think is impossible to finish this book without bawling your eyes out and that's exactly how it was for me. This book is so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. You know what is coming but it doesn't make it easier, just like for Liam. I loved reading it, I really did.

Although I undoubtedly enjoyed this novel, it was certainly not what I was expecting and I have to confess I had quite a few mixed feelings about it as well. The narration was in the third person, but still from the POV of only one MC, Mike. This unusual style gives the story a sort of informal, conversational tone that was unlike any other I have experienced. It was kind of hard to get used to at first, but it grew on me in the end and I actually quite liked it. It was also tough to see the story unfold from only one character’s perspective, especially when you think that character is a complete asshole most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, Mike did have some relatable and even admirable qualities, but hearing his reasoning behind being so awful to Liam most of the time didn't really endear him to me. I'm all for a standoffish broody type, but Mike took that to a whole new level. Liam on the other hand was almost the complete opposite. He was friendly, cheerful, and all around just adorable. He was easy to like and it is no wonder Mike couldn’t ever resist him, even when it was just for sex. I really enjoyed the first bit where there was a lot of banter and playfulness, even if it is a touch reluctant on Mike's part. I also like the last bit when Mike and Liam are ‘unofficially official,’ even if it does get more somber than I normally like near the end. But I’m still left with a sort of uncertain and unsatisfied feeling that I really did not expect from a book that so many others speak so highly of. It was an original and interesting story to say the least, and I will likely read more from this author for that reason alone.

I... was not expecting to cry when I picked up this book. I was not expecting to feel any kind of notable way even halfway through the book. That second half though... BOY. I've read lots of stories about hockey players; it's a niche genre I can't seem to get enough of. This one seemed to be just another in the pile, then it took a serious note. So, yeah, I cried. It happened.
P.S. Do real hockey players know there are approximately 1,000 books, usually written by women, for women, about them all falling in love with each other? I would love to be in any given NHL locker room while a chapter of one of these was read aloud. I think it would be pure comedy, for one reason or another.

i saw the updates of this book from the pre-publication excitement, to rewrites, to edits, to final publication with the final epub sent out. there were no surprises for me plot-wise, aside from a few cosmetic changes and the depth of the story and mike's emotions explored.
in spite of all of that, i'm typing this feeling incredibly weepy and having had tears in my eyes the last few chapters. it's silly that i took this long to read the final book, but i can't say i regret it even though the weight of the plotlines hits far closer to home now. i'm 25 now and i'm still desperately fond of liam fitzgerald, the same way i was at 17. this may not be many people's cup of tea due to the romance community's obsession with "happily ever afters" and not the heartwrenching realities of any love you give. but it's beautiful and romance all the same.
