I am digging this book! Excellent story telling and very good artwork. The series is consistently strong.

These are still pretty underwhelming. I love Barbara Gordon. I want these to be better.

Being a Bat- book, this is pretty firmly in the dark and gritty category, which isn't my favorite. That said, Barbara is pretty compelling, and I enjoy awesome ladies being awesome, and this volume was pretty interesting, so all in all, I'll be looking for the next volume.

I really love the stories and most of the art in this book, but the internal monologue makes it REALLY hard to read (yellow on black thought bubbles), which reduces my enjoyment of it.

The other other odd bit about this volume was issue 9, which was apparently part of a big DC New 52 crossover story. Thing is, reading in a volume like this, and not having read ANY of the other stories, I had no clue what was going on! It ended, then the regular continuity kicked back in – I had to look up what that was all about. Annoying, because it was actually really interesting, and I would have liked to read more, but I'm not interested in buying different titles to follow one story.

Anyway, liking Batgirl. Like the story, like the protag, like the glimpses of other characters we get.

The problems I have with the New 52 as a whole outweigh the positives of this book, but they are there. Babs is strong, compassionate, scared, and if doesn’t entirely sweep her trauma under the rug. Plus, Bruce and Kate.

This volume is leagues above volume one in terms of writing. Simone hit her stride with these issues and I find myself getting sucked in more and more. I wish I could say the same for the artwork. For the most part, it is very good. Realistic and fully fleshed out people. Detailed faces and, while not my favorite color palate (quite dark), it works very well. However, there are times when the faces are entirely disconnected from the action and suck me right out of the book. Barbara's range of faces in one battle midway though through book are two, mildly angry and open mouthed, and the faces of the villains don't show much nuance either. But that gets fixed by the next issue. All in all a good read and although Simone's characterization is much better, it could have used more of her humor. Simone's series like Red Sonja and the New 52 Secret Six are where her writing shines, with a combination of serious and funny.

I'm still finding this enjoyable, and there's a lot of action in this volume, but part of me feels like Batgirl is standing in front of a revolving door of villains all of whom have tragic stories, became unhinged, and then decided to try to make the world a better place by being homicidal.

I see a lot of potential, as far as Knightfall becoming a decent longer-term villainous threat, as well as for Barbara's relationships to be explored, but I'll have to see if the potential is ever fulfilled. A lot has been thrown out there, including, but not limited to Knightfall, James Jr.'s escape and the cliffhanger of restaging the shooting that paralyzed Barbara (junior) with Barbara (senior).
