Thank you to NetGalley for this copy.

I gotta start by saying I'm a huge true crime fan. If you don't like true crime you likely won't like this book.

I'd never heard of Tony Costa but man was he fascinating. I also just find it SO UNREAL how easy it was for someone to murder a person back in the day. He got questioned and would just be like "nah, they just left town" and the cops would be like "oh aight cool!" 😐

His cockiness about not getting caught drove me insane, especially with how gruesome these murders were. The fact that he really was just driving around in the dead girls car .... like what?!?

It also blows my mind that Liza was just chillin' with a serial killer at 9 years old and had no idea. Sheesh

Giving it four stars just because there are SO MANY people to keep track of I truly couldn't tell you who some of them are 😂

It started pretty interesting but I got pretty bored pretty fast. Once I lost interest, I couldn’t get it back.

This is mostly a very sad story about the neglect and abuse of the author, which resulted in her being desperate for attention and being left in the random "care" of various adults...and one of those random adults was Tony Costa, a serial killer. It is interspersed with chapters about Tony's life and eventually, his crimes and his arrest. It's an interesting merging of two very different approaches to telling this story, and it works in some respects, but I thought it was a bit clunky and there were sections of it that were kind of a slog. I feel for the author of course, she suffered greatly and overcame a lot, and I don't mean to detract from that. I feel tenderness towards her and wanted to keep her safe. But the structure of this book and the writing did not work well for me. I found myself reading it faster just to be able to move on to the next book in my pile!

This book has a great narrative feel, and I love the back and forth of perspectives. I was unfamiliar with Tony Costa, and this book has a really well-rounded view of him. TW for murder, rape, dismemberment, abuse, drug use, alcohol use... All the triggers.
Recommend for folx who enjoy true crime, like I'll Be Gone in the Dark (McNamara).
