This is a quiet, domestic horror. No gore, guts, or jump scares, but it gets in your head. It's unsettling, tense, and suspenseful. This edition, from Valancourt Books Paperbacks From Hell series, has an excellent introduction from Grady Hendrix that perfectly sets the backdrop of the political and social climate in which the book was released which added greatly to my enjoyment and appreciation of the book.
The Auctioneer is about a family living out the good life in their isolated country house in a small farming town, a house that has been in their family for generations. It is noted that the house has been in their family for so long that at one point generations before had to fight against Indians to keep it. When the titular auctioneer Perly Dunsmore comes to town the quiet slow life of this rural town begins to unravel.
It's a great horror story, and one that still feels very relevant.
This is a great read if you are looking for subtle, real-world horror that plays on rural anxieties of change.

I wasn’t sure I liked this book for the first 30ish pages. I almost DNFd it, and then all of the sudden this creeping dread hit me. I had a hard time putting it down after that. I’d love to see it as a movie. 4⭐️

Slow burn horror, but not scary horror. More like, the world is ending as we know it, type of horror. The horror of what was happening to the good folk of Harlowe, NH; was slow and intentional. They didn't even see what was happening until the rug was literally pulled from under them. At some point, we all learn, that there comes a point when "Enough is Enough."
See, the Auctioneer came to town. He then auctioned. End of story.
Recommended to those who like a slow, and methodical burn.
