I read this book hoping for some subtle horror. It was recommended by several people online and lauded as a cult classic. I wouldn’t call this book a horror novel, but enjoyed it nonetheless. It’s feels like a time capsule of rural life during this era and each character feels so fleshed out and real. RIP Joan Samson. I love the way she writes with such attention to detail and would have liked to see what else she could write.

Simple, slow-burn, but effective. Reminded me a lot of Needful Things. I was shocked that the townspeople let things escalate so far, but I guess this was back in the days of polite, meek rural townsfolk and not the gun-toting country people I'd imagine today.
The writing is wonderful, but its so laughingly unrealistic in how these salt of the earth farmers don't get together and plug Perly and his deputies full of buckshot. There's no supernatural shenanigans at play, so why are they so docile about it? Even Ken McElroy wound up in the dirt eventually.
