Jeanette Winterson is a masterful writer, not just for the quality of her prose but for the originality of her ideas.

Bought this mini at the globe theatre, which feels perfect for an author with such a close relationship with Shakespeare.

This little gem is a selection of Winterson’s writing, all on the theme of love, explained by her - what was going on when she wrote it, what was she thinking about, how does it relate to politics, other works of literature, society. Makes me want to read more of her and also maybe more vintage minis

I picked up this book from Shakespeare & Company, assuming it’s going to be one of short stories or personal essays at the very least. It was displayed on the shelf close to the door and by impulse, I took it with me. Later on, I realised that each chapter consists of an excerpt from books Jeanette Winterson wrote, with her afterthoughts provided as a complement. All chapters, regardless of how different they sound individually, speak of the same force we call ‘Love’.

This mini collection is a world where I want to immerse myself and get lost in. As I moved from one page to another, it was made clear to me that her depiction of many things (really!) is so beautiful and has this vintage quality that is hard to put in words. These excerpts show her ability to write about things or situations that I would typically ignore for their lack of significance in a way that makes me stop and wonder if I might have missed them in real life (and hence, failing to see the beauty of those moments).

Certain elements resonate with me well – those of faith, of spirituality, of confusion, of contradiction, of the unseen. I want to explore more of Winterson’s works this year and hopefully you could understand why from the below snippet:

Sometimes the thing we long for, the thing we need, the miracle we want, is right there in front of us, and we can't see it, or we run the other way, or saddest of all, we just don't know what to do with it. Think how many people get the success they want, the partner they want, the money they want, et cetera, and turn it into dust and ashes -- like the fairy gold no one can spend.

Overall, this book makes me feel as if I am reading someone’s intermittent memories…if that makes sense at all. I think I’ve just found a new favourite writer.

English Review

It felt so good to read this book. This was the first time that I read anything from Jeanette Wnterson and I really loved how she approach so many things on the book: God, gender, family and much more because Love is not only a feeling, it is much more and that´s what I loved about "Love". This is a read I recommend to everybody who likes to go deeper on their believes and read other people´s point of view.

"What does it mean to love as a man? What does it mean to love as a woman? And does the character of our love change if our own gender, or the gender of our lover, changes?"
