I did my best to try to finish it but I couldn't
I didn't like it at all.

My love for all things Disney dwindled a bit in my adulthood; however, it has recently returned with a vengeance. I haven't yet seen the Descendants movie and I wanted to read this book before I watched it for the first time. In all, this was a fun read. I liked that Melissa de la Cruz included a wide, wide variety of Disney references and not just the obvious ones. I thought the characters were fun and the plot, once it really hit its stride, was compelling. I'm not the target audience for this series but I still enjoyed it for what it is.
Okay, I just gotta say, The Descendents is my guilty pleasure movie.
When I found out there was a book, I had to get my hands on it.
I liked how it told about the lifestyle of the villians on the Isle, with the 'leftovers', and the squalor they had to live in.
Plotwise, it was good. I liked how our 'protagonists' had to go on this quest to find the Dragon's eye, and each character had their own separate motives for doing so.Although neither of them got their way. It's refreshing to see that not always everything turns out the way the characters had hoped, and sometimes it ends in dissappointment.
I loved these renditions of Mal, Jay, Evie, and especially Carlos. I feel like Melissa de la Cruz gave more development to Carlos than in the movie and gave us more information and tid bits about all of the characters. Ben's POV felt a bit useless to the plot but it was interesting to see all the happenings in Auradon.
The writing was nice, not too dense or ridiculously poetic or anything. Nice and straightforward and entertaining, and kept me hooked!

This was cute and entertaining, but really not much else. It mentioned events from the movie a lot, which felt really awkward, and the only characters that seemed to still have their personalities were Ben and Chad. The plot was silly and very easily solved by the core four, especially the whole four talismans bit.
I also felt like the whole Anti-Hero thing was unrealistic. Like, maybe on a smaller scale it would make sense but almost every child? That was a cool twist, but I couldn't really see it being true.
I think for the target age group, this would have been a bigger hit. It was fun, with familiar characters doing their PG thing. It just wasn't one of the really good middle grade stories that can be enjoyed by older age groups, too.
Still, I could be persuaded to read the next one.
