I really enjoyed the way the town and its characters were written, especially Mia. So many secrets and lies. I typically don’t have the patience for stories with drama around miscommunication and misunderstandings, but this story held my attention and I read it nearly in one sitting. I’d definitely recommend it, although be prepared to feel some strong anger towards some of the characters.

a thoughtful reflection on race and the self proclaimed utopia that privileged people create. these people live in a town that's supposedly perfect and doesn't see race, yet race in terms of a chinese child's custody battle and class in terms of her mother who faces poverty are definitely problems. mrs. richardson is quick to shame pearl for getting an abortion while refusing to believe that her daughter, the actual recipient of said abortion, would get herself into that situation because of her position in the community. the whole thing is just so very ironic to me, especially the last few pages in which mrs. richardson thinks about the unconditional bond she has with her now estranged daughter, stating that "she would know her own child, just as she would know herself, no matter how long it had been." it's just such an interesting contrast to the community's belief that Bebe does not have that connection to her daughter anymore because she gave her up due to her financial status. all in all, it was a really interesting look into "progressive" middle-class America that resonates with the rise
of white liberalism and performative activism today. such a bitter, ironic take on the ignorance towards race and class differences and the way that patterns ripple through people without them even realizing.

This was the perfect antidote to having just read a stressful book. It was pacy and juice and intriguing and I was rooting for characters and genuinely cared for some and not others. Excellent and riveting.

Throughout the entire book, Mia was perfect ; there could’ve been a flaw or she could’ve just been endearing… I was just looking for more [skeletons, chaos] in a perfect town.

So much happened… There was a ton of story lines and backgrounds. It was interesting to see each character’s perspective built off their upbringing.
