Crushing Snails
\When Winnie’s mother throws boiling water on her face in the throes of a manic episode, it is the destruction of Winnie’s world and the first step down a dark path. Her suffering will not end with her mother’s imprisonment.
Winnie’s story broke my heart. She’s lost in a sea of darkness and it’s truly a tale of nurture and nature. Her tale was heartbreakingly woven and you saw where it was headed but needed to follow the journey from beginning to end.
There were parts I could have done without. Not all of the investigation scenes fit right nor necessarily added to the story. There were also a couple of chapters that changed perspective to different characters but they didn’t really feel written in a different voice and didn’t feel accurate to the age of the characters. I understand what Emma was doing with the changes but it didn’t feel needed or work as intended.
Despite those points, the story is well done and drives home the path of destruction when home is broken. You want to take Winnie and hold her close, tell her it’s okay, and that she deserves better. It was an emotional read.
I received a copy of this from the author and chose to review it of my own accord. Available for preorder on Amazon and will be released on August 6th.
This one does have trigger warnings and I will include some of them below so read forward at your own risk.
