I'm glad I'd read #8 and #9 before getting to this one.

This one continues to get more confident with the humour, and characters develop nicely, except one.

I've taken off a whole star because Taylor is building hilarity on a character who has gone far across the line into serious mental illness, not excluding repeated near-suicidal activities.

It is, I hope, an anti-spoiler to note that Maxwell comes out of this. And I award a quarter of a star for Taylor's hinting that Bairstow has all this under control and pretty much knew what Maxwell would do.

$#%$^ Clive is still around. I am getting REALLY tired of him. He should have been gone two volumes ago.

Near the end, something Leon does provides a deft setup for things to come.

Another wild ride instalment of the St Mary's Chronicles, this one had me on the edge of my seat and I cannot wait to read the next.

Ok, I've noted in the past (I'm looking at you Book 5) that Max's reckless behavior was starting to get to me, but fortunately, she redeemed herself in Book 6. I started this book expecting to absolutely hate it. I read the synopsis and a handful of reviews and I really thought this would be it for me. That Max would push everyone too far (including me), and I would scrap the series.

Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be my favorite of the series thus far! I'm sorry, but I TOTALLY side with Max, Peterson, Markham, Sands, and Roberts on this one. I believe that while what they did was incredibly stupid, it was also right. I think it was also good for Max to finally see and feel what it's like to be on the outs with everyone. I think it will help her be a little more stable and cautious (but not TOO cautious!) in the future.

The ending was CRAZY! Talk about nail-biting suspense. Of course, you know that's it's all going to work out in the end, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't pop on over to the beginning of the next chapter just to see where she was.

Overall, I loved this installment. My favorite of the series at this point. Max has shown real growth and maturity (strange, I know), and some of the background characters are starting to become much more visible and personal. Peterson and Markham especially are coming into their own within the series, and I'm really enjoying it.

A couple of mini-stories in-between, then it's off to Book 8!

Because there's something in the female genes. Something caried down from the dawn of time, maybe, from when we were bottom of the food chain and everything was a threat. Something that, despite  overwhelming odds, makes us turn, stand at bay, teeth bared, weapons raised, and defend our children."

There's not much to say really. I feel like if, like me, you've reached Book 7 of The Chronicles of St Mary's, then you too are also here for the long-haul. This has been one of my favourites so far. It was the usual mix of adventure, suspense, humour that you expect from this series. I'm excited to see where it will go!

And she's done it again.
So much happens in these books. It feels like you've been on a real ride honestly. Jodi never really lets you get too comfortable with things. The last few chapters of this book were a trip.
When Ronan turned up, I very nearly cried. He really does have a way of doing a number on things. Jodi wrote Max's panic so well, I felt like I could feel it

I like how despite their being so many characters, you do begin to learn all about them. Such good character  development and exploration. All in all, yet another 5 ⭐.
