Beautiful and terrifying

I'm not sure I totally 'got' this book. It's about a woman giving birth and the first year of raising her baby which coincides with an apocalypse. It is short and well written so if it sounds like something you'd like, just read it and see what you think. I just kept getting the feeling that there was no 'there' there.

A very accurate depiction of new motherhood and all its wonders and challenges. The story felt like it was just getting going and then it ended. I enjoyed what was there, but I was left wanting more.

Takes me back to when it was just me and my newborn son. The terrifying unknown of it. Observations that make me lament the newborn times of both my children (which is rare). This is a beautiful novella. Subtlety urgent and very scant.

The Road meets Children of Men written for Mumsnet Lib Dems.

I should've known how awful it'd be given the glowing review from Benedict Cumberbatch on the back cover.

A dark, yet oddly hopeful story. I thought at first that this was an environmental dystopian story, which it definitely is, but there are layers to it. We primarily follow the world's unfolding
and eventual rebuilding through our nameless main character and the growth of her child. I didn't think this would have a happy ending but I was surprised by how hopeful I felt when the story concluded.
It's a short, quick read, but it makes you think.
