This is a lovely, spare book with this epic story at the edges as it centers on a mother and a wife moving through a broken and changed world. It’s like breathing. It’s strange and filling and emptying and I really liked it. I even like the letter-names. The fragments throughout that are like paraphrased bible passages or displaced future descriptions of the events in the novels present are cool and add to the airy timelessness of it. The only grounding thing is the baby’s growth and i find that fascinating. Was a lil confused at times but overall a charming weird lovely gem of a book. And the cover is brilliant too.
A short, poetic, dystopian story full of emotion and brief glimpses in to a terrifying new world born after an environmental disaster floods London. The writing cleverly hints at things only your mind can fill in, which is somehow more gripping than long detailed prose would ever be; this allows your imagination to picture a fight for survival and what you yourself would do in similar circumstances. The contrasts of horror in the world with the innocence of Z is compelling.
With the film adaptation starring Jodie Comer now in cinemas, I was already sold on seeing the film and was definitely eager to read the source material beforehand. I read the entirety of this novel in one afternoon. Granted, this book was short, but I found I couldn't put it down and was captivated from the first page - it's been awhile since I enjoyed a book THIS much.
Megan Hunter's prose has a lyrical and stylistic tone that immediately draws the reader into the main character's perspective. Part apocalyptic thriller and part coming-of-age story, the core theme of motherhood is portrayed with heartbreaking honesty.
Louise Brealey was also a superb choice to cast as the narrator for this audiobook. Her voice fits the main character's internal monologue perfectly. She effortlessly brought the emotion of the story to life.
I'd HIGHLY recommend this book; I'm now even more excited to see the film adaptation!

I love a dystopian novel, but this one is more character-focused than plot. It's good, but focuses a lot on pregnancy, motherhood, and child-rearing.
Graphic: Pregnancy

Beautifully written story about a baby being born at the end of civilization as we know it. It’s short but gorgeously written.
