Human beings cannot be human (much less humane) under the conditions of a factory farm or slaughterhouse.
I must have cried a dozen times while reading this book. The experience has changed me on a fundamental level. I've made the decision to change my dairy consumption and although I am pescatarian, I would now like to lessen or eliminate fish from my diet. If you've ever considered vegetarianism, pescatarianism, veganism or even ethically sourced meat from a family farm, I would recommend this book to you. I would also recommend pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans read this to reaffirm their reasonings for their dietary choices.

As a long time veg, I don’t read books about animal farming. But this one kept getting suggested as great books.
I admit it’s very well done, but holy heck don’t read it if you are already sensitive to factory farming practices. I couldn’t handle some and fast forwarded, but I feel okay with that since I don’t participate in it.
I must say, it’s much harder to be around my near eating family no, but I really wish they’d read this. At the same time, the title is such that most meat eaters probably won’t read it.

Great book for anyone who considers going vegetarian or vegan or just wants to be informed and mindful about what they eat!
Very informative but reads super nicely at the same time. Looks at several sides of the coin and is very down to earth and not too lecturing. A little odd thoug that after all the research on the meat industry no conclusion on the dairy industry were drawn. It promotes vegetarianism with all the arguments that should have led to veganism.
The POV is very American so the data might not apply everywhere.
It is quite graphic, fair warning, animal abuse is described frequently.
