"There is ethical as well as violent forgetting, we can't hold on to everything we've known so far. So the question is not whether we forget, but what—or whom—we forget, not if our diets  change, but how."

I think that what one will get from this book is dependent on where they're at. As someone whom the case to stop eating animal products has been cut and dry for many years, I was interested to hear the perspective of someone who was, at the time of writing, still in the decision-making process. I came away with both a renewed sense of commitment to abstaining from eating animals (many of the statistics and information about the industry brought me to tears), but also a renewed sense of compassion for what a difficult decision doing so can initially be.

There was a lot of good research in the book, but also a lot of personal storytelling and—as noted by other reviewers—it was definitely told through a white, American lens; as a result, I think some of the nuance was lost in regard to the cultural impact of food. For myself, this didn't have a huge influence on the overall message of the book, but I think it's something to be mindful of when reading.

Overall, I think Foer did a great job of marrying research with personal storytelling, and, although I don't agree with all of his conclusions, I'd recommend this book to both omnivores and fellow vegans/vegetarians alike.

really fascinating information that should be widely known. definitely pushed me to reconsider the choices i've made in my life. at the same time, there were parts that came from such a painfully white perspective...
