still so good SO GOOD so clever...if only hannibal s3 could've been true to the book :(
A fun page-turner that's somewhat poorly paced with a somewhat odd structure. Improved upon in some ways by both film adaptations but the book's epilogue is much more satisfying.
"At a time when other men first see and fear their isolation, Dolarhyde’s became understandable to him: He was alone because he was Unique. With the fervor of conversion he saw that if he worked at it, if he followed the true urges he had kept down for so long—cultivated them as the inspirations they truly were—he could Become."

4 stars. I don't know why, but I'm in a horror reading mood and this quenched that thirst immensely because damn! I don't scare easily but certain scenes in this book gave me the creeps.
This was really awesome. It's a fantastic mix of horror and being a crime novel. The characters are all so intriguing and the writing is really good. Though I will say that there is not nearly enough of Hannibal Lecter himself in this novel but when he did show up I was fascinated. I know the next book there will be more of him so I'm excited to read that one.
I'd recommend this book if you like dark, fucked up stories with characters that feel real. Also, if you enjoy the Hannibal Lecter movies I'd say to read the books. I've yet to see the film adaptation for this book in particular but I plan on watching it soon.

mmmm so this was garbage. stan hannibal the tv show instead and beg netflix for season 4, thank you.
the tv show is VERY accurate to this book, AND you get will + hannibal's backstory in the first two seasons and it's just so much better. the writing in this book is so boring and not engaging at all - definitely not worth reading if you've already seen the tv show

Good read. Would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Hannibal Lecter.
Updating my review since I read the unabridged audiobook. This feels a lot better than the abridged version I read years ago, though I do appreciate that that one was narrated by Ed Norton. There's a level of humanity that Francis Dolarhyde that is explored in this that the movie simply never touches on. It's possible, and feels a little wrong, to feel bad for Francis seeing his abused childhood and the horrors that pushed onto him and then other people as a result. Reading this version also gives me a lot more appreciation for the movie and how accurate it feels to the source material.

There were parts in this book I really didn't care much about, but I really appreciated the antagonist throughout.

This is the book that deals with a huge amount of challenging imagery, profiling technology, and the effects of emotional abuse, but we shouldn't forget about the fact that this is also the book where they got an impression of the killer's teeth because he decided to eat a piece of cheese on his murder trip, just saying.
Aside from all of the questionable things that were being eaten, seeing Will reverse engineer the case step by step was incredibly entertaining. His consultation with Hannibal may have only been short, but it set the scene for the future novels very well.
Now, did I enjoy myself when reading this book? For the most part, no. It was vile, disgusting, or just plain disturbing at times, but that‘s also partly where this story's strengths lie. Thomas Harris did not flinch back from challenging topics, which is partly the reason why his writing has this huge potential to be remembered.
I, for my part, will certainly be thinking about those characters for a long time.

Good crime procedural and psychological thriller but the story never reached the peak for me where you can't put the book down.
