It’s not the person, it’s the pattern that’s the problem.

I found this to be another very helpful book by Harriet Lerner. It’s an easy read with all the various case studies she includes, and there’s a lot to be taken away for reflection. This book provides thoughtful suggestions and stories to help alter and strengthen all kinds of relationships. I wish I had read this years ago!

This book is definitely of its time. Very cis-heteronormative. Also it uses the assumption that feelings like anger just come to you, as if they aren’t created by you. I think for most people, feelings coming to you is a useful idea, and if I’d read this book closer to 15 years ago, it might have fit for me better. But I did not.

Also, leaving your kid to be hit by his father so that you change your relationship with the dad is a bad look. Come on.

Ask some of the suggestions for interacting with people seemed manipulative.

Oh well. It was a fast listen.
