As is always the risk when you are writing before the dust settles, this book has been overtaken by events even with the addition of an epilogue. For instance, the book concludes before the deposition of Morsi in Egypt. Bowen focuses on the hotspots of Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Syria; all of which each could have several books written about them. This makes for a slightly unsatisfying lack of depth and I did not feel like I had gleaned any additional insight beyond what I already had from media coverage and discussions with friends from the region. The book is ineffective as a general primer for someone unfamiliar with the uprisings as because these countries are still very much in flux, it is impossible to draw any firm conclusions for the future of these countries or the region as a whole.
