Me recommending this book to everyone I know for the next two months 🗣️📣
A really, really fun retelling of Twelfth Night by Shakespeare (I love a retelling!). I absolutely loved the style of this book, the dual narration, the story, the characters, everything. I really related to Jack’s struggles with his ACL surgery and coming to terms with what it meant for his future (shoutout my own ACL surgery in 2024). I also massively relate to Vi’s constant frustration with being treated differently as a girl in main dominated spaces.
I absolutely blew through this one and it still wasn’t as fast as I wanted to keep going. Obsessed!

This book is a winner! I've never read a character that so accurately describes my high school experiences. Follmuth accurately portrays the challenges faced by girls like Viola in male-dominated spaces and high school, and how people handle those situations in different ways. The pain and anger Viola experiences are so real and well-written, highlighting the struggle of being smart but disregarded and ignored because of her gender. Viola grapples with expressing her emotions, especially anger. The book explores how societal expectations often limit girls’ emotional range especially rage. The novel also emphasizes the importance of pursuing one’s passions and interests, and finding joy in them. It also deals with overcoming challenges and adversities, and how they can sometimes lead to new opportunities. Follmuth's book is an adorable romance that is a definite winner!
3.5* Took awhile to actually like the main female character, does get really good and better in the second half!

I binged this in a day. A retelling of Shakespeare’s The Twelfth Knight. Student vice president Viola Reyes and student president and star running back Jack “Duke” Orsino can’t stand each other. But when Duke is injured in a game, he finds solace playing online role-playing game Twelfth Knight where he meets veteran player Cesario. But Cesario is actually Viola’s online alter-ego, the male persona allowing her a safer space in the gaming community. Can these two resolve their differences and learn that neither of them is who the other thought? This was really fun. My only critique would be that it maybe could have been a little more queer (it was a little queer, but come on, it’s Shakespeare).

The story in itself was really good, I enjoyed that the cut to the chase a lot. The main characters for most of the book was so insufferable that I almost didn’t want to root for her
