A page turner

This book is a psychological thriller. It keeps your attention and makes you want to read more. Susan May is an author to take note of.

The audio version - some of the dialogue the characters had with themselves went on for way too long with way too much flowery descriptions. I actually yelled at it my phone once to just get on with it! Having said that, I had to finish this story to see how it ended. All that and the ending was completely unsatisfactory. Neither of the lead characters is likeable in any way so the ending seemed unjust somehow.

Anyway, it was okay but not running out to read another one of this author's books anytime soon.

I was excited for this book and the beginning was intriguing. I was interested until about chapter 35, though, starting out the book, I found it annoying at first how the chapters were back and forth equally between William and Nem. It was almost like reading two books simultaneously. Once I figured out how the stories intertwined, I thought it was clever and then I got excited again. However, my excitement was misplaced since the book seemed to drag on from that point and I found myself less and less interested and even rather bored. The author needed to bring out the word razor andd trim away too many extra words. I did want to find out what happened after investing the time, so I finished the book. The ending wasn't anything special either. I'm giving it 3 stars because it was an interesting idea. It just could have been much better.

William Barnes, author… obsessed? possessed? addicted?

Nem Stratton, child… young woman… forsaken? abandoned? lost?

Don't be fooled by labels and generalities. William and Nem are not necessarily what they first seem. Susan May doesn't put the best bits in your face. No, she works up to them by crafting a tale that you cannot put down. In the case of BEST SELLER, she is crafting two story lines in alternating chapters. I do not use 'crafting' lightly because without careful composition, it might have been difficult to keep each narrative moving forward and memorable.

Susan May has become one of my 'must read' authors over the past couple of years. She brings a fresh perspective to supernatural speculative fiction by mixing reality with subtle hints of otherworldliness. She drops a hint here and then another over there until you realize that something magical is happening, and not always in a good way.

In BEST SELLER, the word is 'luck.' We all know that famous Clint Eastwood line "… you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?" I can't tell you how many times this line percolated into my thoughts while I was reading. There are ever so many widely used references to luck in literature, song, and everyday speech that this is a book literally for everybody. After all, who hasn't wished for a bit of that illusive thing?

Along with everybody, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever written a book, or thought about writing a book. There is much about the world of the writer here that has little to do with creating a manuscript and everything to do with the publishing of a product.

If you haven't yet read Susan May, this is a good place to take the plunge. Her works of fiction are not only entertaining and well written, they are informative as well. I look forward to reading her next "best seller."

susan may has been compared to stephen king and it is soooo true. i loved how this book was about fictional upcoming best selling authors and she referenced a few well know real life ones many time throughout this book. it was like she did so much research on her topic like king does and the writing styles were similar that part way through i thought i was reading a king novel. the only reason for not giving 5 stars is due to figuring the story out earlier than i would have liked.

So incredibly drawn out. Wish I would've stopped reading earlier, but I stuck with it.

I was expecting more. I skimmed over a lot of it. Especially the William parts. They seemed too long and overwritten.
