who knew all it would take for me to enjoy historical fiction was for it to be gay lol. but also... i really liked this... it doesn't feel historical at all in a weird way??? it has a very modern way of going about history which i think is really interesting... the characters are still really relatable despite the difference(s) in time periods

I wasn't entirely impressed with this book to start off with.  The plot was ridiculous and I found the main character of Monty to be incredibly annoying.  It was fairly readable though so I carried on with it.  Monty did improve and was reasonably decent by the end, so that character growth was good.  I found Felicity to be a far more interesting and appealing character even so.  The plot-line got even more ridiculous and I couldn't quite tell if it was intended to be taken seriously or for laughs.  It seemed to swing between the two.  I was mostly surprised that there wasn't more in the way of sex in it, it seemed to be the one main thing that was missing!  All in all, it was a quick read that didn't require much thought.  It's probably good for a summer read.

This book read like fan fiction, in the best possible way. The plot was driven by adventure but the main focus was on the secret crush of the main character in a 'friends-to-lovers narrative which, whilst overdone, is still very charming. If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be just that - charming. The characters were well-constructed and witty; the only thing that made me slightly uncomfortable was the main character's lack of awareness or real progress in understanding race despite being in love with a mixed-race boy who experienced a lot of racism that Monty just brushed off. I wish there was slightly more development on that front, similarly to Monty's sister's development past her own homophobic prejudices. Maybe I am just too much of an optimist or I am looking for a fully-polished novel; whilst this book was enjoyable and charming, polished it was not. It is slightly haphazard and the plot cannot take too much scrutiny or it would fall apart. But this book, like any other, does not have to be polished to be enjoyable; the meandering and outrageous storyline suits the premise and characters perfectly. It does not hold up to scrutiny but it does not have to; it is not meant to be read with an analytical or overly serious eye. It is merely a charming book intended to be enjoyable to the audience (which it is) and offer solace to certain sections of that audience perhaps struggling with similar issues as Monty or at least seeking a gay character they can relate to (which it provides). The book therefore succeeds in what it achieves and is a wonderful light-hearted tale that many will enjoy. Plot holes be damned.

The book was fine, though I hated the main character. I was enjoying watching the romance shape up and was looking forward to seeing the main character learn some important life lessons (and deal with his own trauma). Unfortunately, I was having some bad anxiety attacks when I was tackling this book, and the descriptions of blackout drunk sessions and seizures was causing me to have anxiety attacks.

I had so much fun with this book! Henry “Monty” Montague is a bisexual disaster, at times a diva, sarcastic, wry and kind of a coward, and it all makes him a bloody excellent narrator. We follow him on a Grand Tour across Europe, wherein he's accompanied by his younger sister Felicity and best friend/major crush Percy. 'Tis meant to be the one last escapade for Monty before he's forced to return home and learn the ropes of estate management, but the trip quickly becomes derailed as the three are now on a run from pursuers. Various hijinks ensue, and there even be (the worst in the world, but still very loveable) pirates.

I listened to this as an audiobook narrated by Christian Coulson, and the narrator brings a lot of personality and hilarity to an already witty written story - I laughed out loud multiple times! I absolutely loved the main trio, and it's great that the book explored themes such as racism, homophobia, sexism, and having a chronic health condition in the 18th century.

My only criticism is that I didn't care much for the manhunt plot - the antagonists felt cartoonish at times, and I thought that some of the challenges were overcome a bit too easily. But this is a book written for an audience younger than me.

Overall, can recommend to anyone looking for a fun and adventurous read and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!
