Ok, so for sure erotica gets rated on a different scale from other books, LOL.  There IS plot, which is nice.  The writing was fine, and the audiobook narrators were (separately) pretty good.  One thing, though -- they trade off chapters depending on whose POV it is, but they then voice the other's dialog as well. My issue was that they each voiced the other character COMPLETELY differently from how the other narrator was doing it.  Did the director not ensure that the characters sounded consistent chapter to chapter??

Other than that, I kind of disagree with the "fantasy" descriptions tagged onto this book.  It was just a normal contemporary setting, where they have cell phones and shit.  There's no other magic or powers other than there being an uncomfortable feeling when crossing a bridge?  They're called "Gods" but they display no actual power.  IDK I just really was hoping for something interesting coming from the mythology, but all we got were the names (titles).  Not going to continue in the series because I didn't wind up giving a fuck about any of the other characters.

I did really like this, though as far as retellings go, the author definitely had some artistic license, so don't go into this expecting a loyal retelling.

But the characterisation of the main characters were good, not over the top or too cringey. It's a light read, so I didn't expect any hard hitting stuff, and at least the novel recognises itself enough not to veer off the deep end.

And yes, the descriptions were very, very good. Compared to other similar novels, this one is for sure one of the better ones, I would recommend it just for that if that's what you're looking for.

It’s not like I need my smut to be pullitzer-prize worthy, but if Roberts had tried even a little bit to give this book a real plot, it might’ve done more for me. Sex scenes were hot, sure, but not nearly as “wicked” as the protagonists would have you believe. Moreover, the Olympus overture could’ve been really interesting in a modern setting, but in this pornographic twist on Hades’ seduction of Persephone, it only fell flat.
