Fellow white folks: Ya must read this one, cats and kittens. It's important. Robinson gives you the straight shit, and she's wonderfully funny while doing so. There were a couple stories in it that I'd already heard on the pod, but for the most part this was new material with fresh insights and illuminating context. Looking forward to more from this dope queen!

Phoebe (yes I feel we are on a first name basis now) is indeed funny even if I don't get all of her pop culture (i.e. top 40 / TV) references, but there is a pre-Trump flavor (2016) to this that is somewhat lacking. I liked her 'Everything's Trash, But It's Okay' (2018) better, and am looking forward to her latest essay compilation.

As a fan of Phoebe Robinson's podcasts (2 Dope Queens and Sooo Many White Guys) this was a hit for me. Robinson's unique sense of humor shines in this novel as does her personal experiences on all things related to being a black woman in the US and having an almost unhealthy obsession with U2. My only critique of this memoir is that the pop culture references might be hard for anyone outside of the US or a certain age to understand. There are a lot of references that I needed to look up myself. But the references are not necessary to understand the experiences that she has dealt with, both bad and good from being dubbed the "black friend" and being snubbed on "Last Comic Standing" for having natural hair in her headshot to discovering her love for her blackness and being unabashedly herself. I'd definitely give this book a read if you are looking to both laugh your ass off while simultaneously questioning if you are truly "woke".

Wow, this was absolutely fabulous, and also interesting to read. There were various parts that just made me laugh so hard, she really has a way with her words. :)
Bonus points go to the title it is what drew me to the book in the first place when I spotted it on Amazon.
