Such a cute book, I watched the movie a lot as a kid, as well as "Tales from the Neverending Story" a Canadian show on HBO from 2000 which I remember liking even more!
But I was impressed by how different the book was and how many new adventures I got to enjoy :)

Awesome - the use of colored letters, the metalinguistic approach, and the story itself make it a book for both children and adults.

"The Storyteller's Psyche"'s video on YouTube is what encouraged me to read this book. Their take on how the ego, shadow, and spirit, - our selves - walk the Hero's Path through trials and healing and integration, primed my experience for this book wonderfully.
Ende's subtext is so powerful that it reflected many of my own personal physical and spiritual experiences and made this for not just an enjoyable read, but an enriching story that I will carry with me through my life in many forms and fashions.
The addition of the pictures, chapter beginnings, and colorful text, made this a really wonderful experience too.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. Every time I read it I pick up on something new.
I was lucky enough to get a newish edition that had the multicolored inks and the full-page chapter starters. It took me until last year to realize that the 26 chapters of the book each start with a letter of the alphabet.
I love the story within the story, and how Mr. Ende portrayed fantasy as being both savior and devil. In the first section of the book, Bastion's imagination is what saves Fantastica and Atreyu from the Nothing - but when he is in Fantastica his fantasies almost destroy him.
It's a powerful tale within a tale about the double-edged powers of imagination, and it's written so lovely as well.
Do what you wish.
